Overview
What problem does it solve?
Hierarchy, harmony, and consistency frame the current HIG: content stays legible, interface geometry relates to the device, and familiar conventions adapt across contexts.
What the system documents
- Use system-defined components and conventions so interaction remains familiar and gains built-in behavior.Supporting reference: Human Interface Guidelines
- Account for each platform’s input model, from touch and pointer to remote, Digital Crown, and eyes and hands.Supporting reference: Human Interface Guidelines
- Provide sufficiently sized controls, visible feedback, alternatives to gestures, and support for assistive technologies.Supporting reference: Accessibility
Why this system is worth studying
HIG is best studied as a decision framework for native products—not as a web component catalog. Its deepest value is explaining how navigation, presentation, input, and feedback change when the device changes.
For browser-first implementation detail, token packages, or dense enterprise tables, a web-focused system such as Carbon, Primer, or USWDS may be a more direct reference.
One principle, six platform contexts
Change the platform to inspect how input, navigation, layout, and presentation assumptions shift. The shared goal is familiarity—not identical screens.
Direct touch, device buttons, keyboard and assistive inputs
Navigation stacks and tab bars commonly organize compact full-screen tasks
Safe areas, size changes, orientation, and Dynamic Type reshape available space
Sheets, alerts, menus, and full-screen experiences express consequence and task scope
Independent educational interpretation. Confirm implementation details in the current Human Interface Guidelines. Apple does not sponsor or endorse UXD Systems.
